Broken Bones Matilda are a British band comprised of two childhood friends that met in Bath, Somerset. Sam grew up in the west country playing in rock bands and spent most of his childhood in his room teaching himself how to sing and play guitar. Sarah, half French, half Scottish has never called just one place home. A lover of fairy-tales, wildlife and wandering through nature, she channels both the wildness of the Scottish hillsides and the seductive allure of Parisienne backstreets.
Sarah’s raw, mystical voice brought something new to Sam’s songwriting. The duo tell tales of love and loss, often tragic yet uplifting that tap into the emotional vulnerability we all experience on some level at some point in our lives. It’s often said people suffer for their art, in this case it would appear Gotley has let the characters in his songs suffer on his behalf.
Since forming in 2017 the band have released two EP’s, ‘Madeline” and “Live at the Pool” the latter released earlier this year (2019) and recorded at The Pool in Bermondsey. After a successful festival season in 2018, playing over 25 festivals including Black Deer, Bearded Theory, Belladrum, Wilderness & The Edinburgh Fringe, the band decided to bring everything they love about playing live into the studio. Teaming up with Grammy award winning engineer Matt Lawrence (Mumford & Sons, Adele, Amy Winehouse) and inviting their friends in to play on the record, the result was a raw live performance captured in a high end studio prompting the band to wonder “why don’t we always record like this?!”
Following their 2019 EP release the band are set for another busy summer with 20 festival performances booked including Glastonbury, Carfest and a slot supporting Texas at Pub in The Park where they will share a stage with Will Young, Gabrielle & Basement Jaxx. Look out for them performing with their live band where they are joined onstage with Sarah’s younger sister Roselee on keys and backing vocals. Described as Nick Cave meets Fleetwood Mac expect soaring 3-part harmonies blended with a dark rock n roll attitude!
